About Project

This project focuses on the design of a metro train for the M2 line in Ankara. We aimed to enhance user experience, accessibility, and efficiency while reflecting the identity of the city. The design considers both interior and exterior aspects, integrating functionality, comfort, and sustainability into a cohesive system.

Field Research

The purpose of this research is to analyze the dynamics of metro system usage, passenger experiences, and challenges encountered, aiming to gain insights for a more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly metro design.

Observations

The insights below summarize the field research and serve as the basis for the subsequent problem statements and design opportunities.

  • Most passengers prefer to sit, but narrow seating creates discomfort and forces them into cramped positions.

  • Passengers feel uneasy in the metro stations, especially, where unclear boundaries add to the sense of insecurity.

  • Limited navigation aids inside and inadequate wheelchair space, making movement challenging for passengers with mobility needs.

  • Passengers with suitcases or large bags struggle to find storage space, creating discomfort and disrupting travel flow due to limited storage options.

  • Missing or faulty arrival displays cause confusion, underscoring the need for reliable information.

Problem Statements

• Difficulty maintaining personal space due to constant movement

• Lack of versatile spaces for flexibility and social interaction.

• Congestion and navigation challenges in crowded metro lines.

• High maintenance needs due to continuous usage.

Design Opportunities

• Offering personal storage for passenger belongings, and spacious seating areas

• Providing flexible and social seating solutions.

• Displaying real-time crowd and space availability.

• Ensuring durability with easy-to-clean materials.

Crowd Management System

  • Our IoT-based system optimizes crowd management, accessibility, and passenger experience.

  • IoT sensors, installed throughout the train and above doors, collect real-time data on passenger numbers, accessibility areas, and bicycle spaces.

  • This information is displayed on the PSD, transparent LED screens.

  • During peak hours, the system triggers additional trains, reducing overcrowding and enhancing service efficiency.

  • This smart system ensures comfort, informed decision-making, and a seamless travel experience.

Onboard Navigation System

The metro display provides essential journey information, showing remaining time to the next stop and nearby landmarks like malls, museums, and cultural centers in Ankara.

This helps passengers prepare, explore key sites, and enhances their travel experience with real-time updates.
